How do you Outrank an Authority Site?

Recommended Posts

Ok, I have a keyword with 90,000 EXACT searches a month. ( Diet Niche )

Ranking #6 for that keyword.

The first 2 listings are EXACT match domains with hyphens in between them - Domain age - 7 years

The next 2 listings are from WEBMD & WIKIPEDIA

The next is everydiet.com

Then comes mine.

My domain is 6 months old.

Whatever i do i don't move beyond this point. Not an inch.

So, this is achievable or should i have to wait till i get old ? smile.png

What would you suggest to get it to the top atleast #3?

Replicate the backlink profile of the entire top 10 while continuing to do what you have done to rank at the moment. Also make sure your page has at least 500 retweets.

Maybe not until you get old but it is probably going to take you awhile. This is the kind of situation where you just have to keep plugging away. The age of the site is working against you for two reasons. First because it is only 6 months old, in other 6 months or so that probably be less of an issue as the age benefit seems to be less as your site ages some. From what I have experienced the benefit a two year old site has over a new site is a lot but the benefit of a three year old site over a one year old site is not really all that much. The other (and I think more important) advantage the other sites have is the age of their links. Google seems to give links more weight as they age which makes sense if you think about it, a good solid link that has been around for a couple of years should be worth more than a brand new link. The sites above you probably have loads of links that are older than your site, you just have to keep adding links and let them age. More than a few times I have had sites with a much better link profile than the sites above them but could just not move up that last few spots. I just put the project on the back burner a bit and put the site into a slow rotation where I am still adding links but at a slow and steady rate and then all of a sudden the site pops up and has the top spot. I have also done the same thing where I just stopped building links altogether and the same thing happened, the links I had just needed to age for awhile and gain more weight in Google's eyes.

My advice is to make sure your link profile looks better than the sites above it, once you have that done just keep plugging away at the site but move your focus onto a new project and keep this one going in the background and as time goes by it will move up.

Sage advice, ARV

That's basically the long and short of it. I would add that I've been able to (on occasion) break above sites like that through multiple high PR purchases from old established sites, on old pages.

Of course, these days with Google's gaping holes, perhaps its easier and more cost effective just to send 800,000 porn links to your competitors in spots 1 through 5 for $50 a piece on Fiverr (or whatever).

But that's another conversation altogether...

Wikipedia is actually pretty easy to outrank to be honest. WebMD not so much but I have a few sites outranking Wikipedia with just a few months of SEO done to them.

Try some high quality web 2.0s and funnel link juice through them to your site.

NSEO used to work for 2 ~ 3 weeks after penguin, We have tested the NSEO with 2 websites and NSEO worked.

IMO now it does not work, I think Google has fixed it. Now it might not be possible to do NSEO for any website. any views on this ?

I really hope so, to be honest. Myself I honestly just couldn't bring myself to conduct NegSEO... With the exception of blasting YT vids with s-loads of masslinks to see what would happen - I'm sure you can guess how that went.

It would be great if external links are no longer negative.

Can anyone confirm this?

Give me the URL of your main site and I'll show you it still works.

Negative SEO will be possible as long as it is possible to penalise your own domain with bad backlinking practices.

Either Google removes penalties for off-site factors or negative seo stays with us :). There's no way around that.

Replicate backlinks, and add LOTS of good content to your site. Cover all related topics/keywords to your sub niche, make your own authority site. Dont expect to outrank an authority site with a two pager site with thin content.

Do you think that these services have an effect on ranks? All they have are fake profiles exchanging votes. You're sure abt Ranks?

I honestly doubt you could hurt wikipedia, while I suppose it might be possible it would probably take such a huge number of links that would make it impractical.

If someone has a wikipedia page blocking them from the top spot for a lower competition keyword say <10k exact match let me know and will throw 500k low quality links at it to see what happens.

Well I was thinking more along the lines of a keyword that might actually help somebody if wikipedia dropped but I will go with "web hosting services" it has 12k exact and I can not really think of a good reason why it should be #1.

I will drop at least 500k links on it all with the exact same anchor text and we will see what happens.

A lot of great advice has been given already. I would personally not do any NSEO that's just not my style. I rather beat someone fair a square. I would follow the advice of what others have already said.

continue building high quality links, publish new content daily/weekly, get social signals to your site. I use socialadr.com which works great.

ARVolund: The option is a good one, Rather than targeting many keywords, It is better to target a single keyword & one URL and try and see the result.

Let me take the SERP now, so that we can compare it later.

Keyword: web hosting services

URL: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Web_hosting_service

date: 28-Aug

Search Engine SERP Position

Google.com 1

google.co.uk 1

google.com.au 1

google.co.in 1

google.ca 1

www.google.de 1

note: I dont have any business interest for this keyword: web hosting services. my interest is only knowing the current status of the NSEO. :-)

True to an extent .. Age does have a positive factor > But you can still manage to outrank the above sites

You need to make sure your content is updated on a regular basis, you should try and get backlinks from places the above sites are already getting, you should try and get MOST of your backlinks from health related sites (your niche specific) go and try to do link exchange with good high PR sites

One of the best ways to take a Wiki page down is by editing out all of the internal links pointing to the page which is a lot easier said than done ;)
