There are some dedicated ecommerce platforms that may well be a better choice than wordpress for an ecommerce site. Unless I was doing a very basic site with a limited number of items I would probably not use wordpress.

If you are going to use wordpress for ecommerce I would check out the woocommerce site as they have what you need to run ecommerce on wordpress.

I agree with Daniel if you are going to do eCommerce on WordPress then WooCommerce is the way to go.

Another vote for WooCommerce if you want to build a store on a WP base. The core (which is free) will cover the basics and if you need special add-ons there are some free ones and some paid ones.

It really depends on a few things. How many products are you going to be selling? Do you want to self host on your own domain or would you rather use a turn key solution? Do you want to deal with shipping and/or payments or have someone else do that? How much do you want to be able to modify the platform?

There is really no one size fits all when it comes to eCommerce.
