Yes you are exactly right in what you say. It is called PageRank flow. Every link that is not a dofollow link contained within a page allows PagRank to flow to the pages that are being linked to. If you are using a Wordpress based site {or any other well constructed site) it is extremely common for the contact pages or any other pages that are linked to from every page throughout the site (i.e the navigation bar) to increase it's PR value quite quickly. I have had many of my own and my clients websites go from PR0 to PR5 in less than 3 months. Actually, the last PR update before this one I had a site of my own go from PR n/a to PR 3 in less than 3 weeks. PR is about the incoming links not the quality of the content. The content can help build PR by being linked to, but ultimately PR is gained from the incoming links. It is not surprising in the age of blog networks to have a site increase in PR very quickly.

Ok cool, thanks for the info:)....

1).how often do pr updates take place?

2)and why then if a site can go from pr 0 to pr5 in under 3 mths,do ppl spend thousands of dollars on them and they can be gotten for almost free just from backlinks .?

    1) PageRank updates used to happen regularly around every 3 months. There is no guarantee. It just depends on what mood the Google gods are in.

    2) People buy domains with existing PR for a number of reasons. They are a good source of instantly adding a high PR site into a network and not needing to wait for a PR update to happen therefore you can utilise the PR and authority straight away for building backlinks i.e blog networks. They are also bought because people like to use the fact that they are aged to build money websites on because they already have some trust factor with Google and can often be agressively linked to without incurring any penalties.

If you have the time an patience it is a good tactic to own a set of High PR domains and then register fresh domains and link to them from the existing domains to utilise the PR to build a blog network. It just takes a lot more time to do it because you are relying on the PR updates to occur to get any real benefits of this process. But there is a lot to building a network than just buying high PR domains and hoping for the best and that is probably something that is better understood after you get the concept of what PageRank is..

There are a lot of articles out there on PageRank flow. I read a good one on webseoanalytics.com I think it was a few days ago and if I can locate it again I will send it to you by PM or post it in this thread..

Here you go - this is a very simple image that helps you understand Pagerank flow through a link structure. Quite possibly the simplest way to understand it without going into technical details. The PageRank is the water. The holes are the dofollow links. The more links, the more holes. The more links flowing to any one page, the more the water (pagerank) flows. The original article is at http://www.webseoanalytics.com/blog/10-tips-for-better-internal-link-architecture/ but it is not an actual PageRank flow article. Just do a Google search and I am sure you can find some good information.

Actually, maybe do a search in Bing for "Google Pagerank flow" and you may come up with more relevant results. After the Penguin update you are likely to end up with a front page full of Viagra results instead of whatever you are actually looking for on Google :-)
