Same happening with one of my site, was ranking for a competitive keyword:

First day after update, it was moving at 15th page
Second day it was on 4th page
Third day it was on 4th page
Fourth day didn't checked
Fifth day its on 13th page

I have spent a lot of time reading all kind of things on different forums an blogs and most of the people that got affected (including myself) by this had links from web 2.0 sites (blogspot, tumblr and so on) pointing to their sites. Apparently links from these sites are seen as spam by Google.

I have no Idea if that is the case but it would make sense if it was, or at least if it is a part of it.

The site you should be looking for is checkintocash.com which still is ranking for those keywords.

I completely concur. I have been saying this for a while now. I suspect Google intentionally make the algorithm throw out random exceptions to the overall rule as otherwise SEO'ers would know exactly what had occurred and would be able to figure out exactly how to remedy it.

But Terry, that aside does not explain what is happening with the Penguin update. In the past we would get random, crappy sites still rank but those "random, crappy sites" were at least relevant to the keyword search. Since Penguin we are getting random sites popping up for very competitive search terms that have ZERO relevance to the search terms entered. That cannot be sustainable from Google's point of view as if it continues their reputation will be shot.

I like Fraggler's 'mining moon rocks' theory on this one Spiritus.

Seriously though, the whole Penguin debacle smacks of a panicked rush job that didn't go through typical QA type testing before implementation. Can't remember an update as poor as this in terms of results relevancy.

The curious thing here is why the rush and mess?

Let's observe Google's remedial action over the coming weeks and keep developing our non-Google (and even non-search engine) traffic sources.

+1 for Bing. I am seriously considering switching.

The edu/wiki/.gov nonsense in Google starts to annoy me. Once search results get worse it's time to switch. And i think the time has come now.

Bing is not going to compete Google within days or within months, we are here to earn money, so we have to rely on that one from where we can earn in near future and that's currently Google.

Does anyone see any correlation between sites hit with unnatural linkbuilding message and others that just disappeared from serps? I received the message on two sites of mine where they still rank for most of their terms, however on the second page now. But my other sites that just disappeared from serps didn't get the message. Seems like the unnatural message sites faired better. And I have noticed that the unnatural message sites have been slightly improving little by little every day in the serps.

Bing matters to my business right now. I get leads and sales from it.

My MS ad network buys do better than adwords for bounce rate, time on site, and conversions for the same exact terms I pay for and optimize for organic rankings. Why? I don't know why, but there is a part of that demo that doesn't even realize there is a difference when they use the toolbars that get installed with free antivirus and other *****, they think it's all the same. Those that use it more might also be more willing to research or except different ideas since they don't just go with the rest of the crowd.

It will take time, but the failure of most large empires is when when they get away from what made them successful and they think nobody can challenge them.
