I need to build a small very niche not for profit social network/community site and was wondering if anyone had any recommendations for some easy to use platforms with good functions? At the moment I am thinking either phpfox or elgg...

forums have lots of great platforms like vbulletin and ipboard but you dont hear much about community sites/social networks... the main reason i need to do this as opposed to just a normal forum is that users must be able to search for other users by various categories e.g location, interests, age and so on, and photo galleries are very important.

Also, I am guessing this will be quite bandwidth intensive, are there any hosts i should be looking at in particular? At the moment I am using a shared hostgator server but I am guessing that this will not be sufficient.
