About 3.5 weeks ago I created a batch 10 niche sites. All followed the same template: wordpress site, optimized on-page SEO, 5 500+ word articles.

    Here's the interesting thing:

After creation, I worked on backlinking 7 of the sites. My backlinking method was spin an article and create 10 web 2.0 (e.g. tumblr) and/or high quality article dir (e.g. ezine, squidoo) sites with 1 page of spun content. I then used UAW wizard to blast the 10 sites with links. This was all done within 1-2 days of putting up the site.

Now, a few weeks later, the sites with a backlinking campaign are performing much worse than those without any backlinking. Of the 7/10 backlinked sites, most started on page 3-5 and have slowly dropped, most landing on page 20+ as of today. Of the 3/10 non-backlinked sites, all are now on page 2 or 3.

What do you think? Link velocity issue? Should I keep backlinking? Add backlink diversity? More content?

To me it sounds way too soon to blast with backlinks
i dont even start backlinking for about 2-3 weeks, very slowly, I know thats overkill but yours sounds a bit too eager to backlink

You think? Based on a previous post I made here most people said go ahead and blast - it won't make a difference since big G will index the backlinks slowly.

Could be a dance. Are you backlinking the homepage as well?

Do you mean creating backlinks that go to the home page of my niche site? If so, that's pretty much all I've been doing. Should I add variety and link to individual pages within the niche site?

I am a MNS creator, I do this for a time, and I strong recommend buying a subscription to 20-30 High pr sites . That helped me in almost all of my micro niche sites .

Brand new domains are touchy - that's why I prefer to work with aged domains with PR, they are much more robust.

Without aged domains or 301s, work on a timeline of 2-3 months to gain traction with a brand new site (depending on the competition of course).

How many keywords are you targeting to each site?

One main keyword per site, half are exact match .com.

Could just be dancing.  I know that I usually take a drop before coming back a little stronger.  Though I would prefer to create a smaller number of higher quality links instead of a higher number of lower quality links.  (And use the lower quality / automated links on the higher quality links.)

  <--- That's my brain after typing that.

If you want to shorten the process then 301 an aged domain.

Your anchors need to be distributed better. Your inital links need to be diverse.

    main page keywords
some inner page keywords or category
    url
    some phrases
    stop words
