I am thinking about starting a new niche site with some stiff competition. I was going to build a brand new site from scratch, but I ran across a chance to get a PR4 domain with at least 400 strong existing links to it. There is no content on this site now as it is an expired domain. The domain name is somewhat themed towards this particular niche. Am I correct in thinking it would be wise to try and get this domain, (or any other similar domain that has PR and lots of links) as opposed to building a completely new site from scratch? Would it help me to rank a little easier among the competition? I'm sure this is the case, but I wanted to get a little input on this as I may have to end up paying up to $200 to acquire this domain, rather than spending $7.95 for a brand new domain. Thanks in advance for any advice I can get.

That I did not take into account. Thanks for pointing that out. It is 7 years old, so it is an aged domain. I've always created new sites from scratch, but this seems to be the way to go with all of the backlinks, age and PR.

I would use that PR4 over a new domain every day of the week S - it should give you a great rankings jumpstart when your backlinking starts and on-page is sorted out.

I agree with Terry here, the cost is well worth it, especially in competitive nices. Think you could rank it in a month but a new one may take you 3. If is competitive then I would assume there is money in it so it would make back the investment plus more in the time difference for ranking.

Good question, i've often wondered the same.  How closely related is the PR4 aged domain to the niche you are trying to rank for?  I always thought it was good to have the keyword in the URL.  For instance if your keywords were "winter gloves for sports", would a brand new winterglovesforsportsnow.com domain be better than a PR4 domain with only a few related words?

Thanks Terry. I'm going to start looking for domains in the future that will give me somewhat of a boost when I build a new niche site, instead of starting from scratch.

Adam, this domain is related to my niche, but it does not actually contain the word of the niche I am concentrating on. It would be something along the lines as if the niche I wanted to get into was about cars, the domain with PR and links I would try to pick up would be something like alltypesofvehicles.com. And then if I wanted to do so in the future, I could use this domain for more than just cars. I could eventually grow the site to focus on motorcycles, trucks, etc.

400 strong backlinks to the domain + 7 years age = worth the 200$ in my book.

the age and PR alone are worth it :)

Even if that domain costs $1000 it would be a much better option than registering a new one
