So if you register a user whose name starts with a special character, then your profile will be linked directly from the member list page. I think this helps in indexation a lot, since your profile won't be buried on the 1251. page.
for example, take a look at this: http://www.vbulletin.org/forum/memberlist.php
Some forums list the website of the members, too. So if you are on the first page in the member list, then your backlink will be cached.
Now take a look at this: http://www.sencha.com/forum/memberlist.php
This is a PR4, dofollow member list page. You can see the cached version if you type this into Google:
cache:http://www.sencha.com/forum/memberlist.php
As you can see, the website URLs of the members on the first page are cached. So this is a free PR4 dofollow backlink!
So you want to make sure that your username stars with special characters. The downside of this approach is that your profile will be more visible to moderators. But I don't think that every moderator will delete your profile, some will stick.

1) Filter your Forum Profiles DB to only PR2+ Links.
2) Filter away any Domains that are not cached by Google to stay away from bad neighborhoods as much as possible. This can easily be done via ScrapeBox.
3) Try to add LSI content to your profile (Content somehow related to your keyword). Maybe within the Hobbiest/Signature section.
I have promoted 1,000's of domains and my advice is solely based on TONS of experiments done in the past and post-Latest Panda Update.

i'm not agree...i tested after panda update they have lost 70% -80& of their power. ( of course i got them indexed but google don't keep them indexed because now consider them spam-link --i also tried to add content in bio etc etc )..are more powerfull socialbookmarks actually....also blog comments for me are out...google now can detect in easy way spam link ..and honestly forum profile ( i used them for years with great success before panda update) and blog comment links are spam link...
i'm using socialbookmarks, wiki article, articles and other in-content link now with good results...of course with profile was simpler in past but now for me they are dead

Can you PM or show few example links here? I can point out the problem, you can try again with my guidelines, they work great every time.
I am sending a set of link profiles that are still not indexed. Note that a large number of profile links have been deleted since last summer, so the sample might not be very meaningful.

I came into reading about this experiment (and others) late so had to play catch up all in one morning as I ploughed my way through the discussion thread and findings all in one morning.
Firstly, as usual Terry, what a great experiment and very useful set of findings.
The only comment I would make and I guess this stems through my own findings backed up in our own set of empirical tests is that for us, no one particular technique or methodology works in isolation anymore.
In SEO as we tell our clients, you have to evolve or die. Our own service has evolved out of all proportion to what we used to provide four years ago. No one particular favourite tool works perfectly in isolation anymore but they all still do in varying stages when used in conjunction with others and I guess this is the same with Forum Profile links.
Fascinating read and once again thanks Terry for taking the time and trouble to put this all together.

I'm excited to see these results; there's so many rumors about SEO that it's hard to know what's true.
BTW- I got to #1 in Google recently for two keywords with 4K exact local match EXCLUSIVELY using BuildMyRank as backlinks. That told me something:) (new pages on my PR5 site I started in 2005)
Hey Ellen, I know it's been a while, just wondering how is that working out for you now? did the website get the message in Webmaster tools?
just wondering..
