Panda/Penguin: Let's Recap On The Big SEO Do's & Don'ts Now

OK, so now that the dust has settled a little, let's take a look at how to address the cataclysmic Panda/Penguin changes in Google so far in 2012.

At the outset, let me make it clear that there will always be exceptions in SEO (and life) and that does not invalidate generally consistent trends - something that we need in SEO: general patterns of consistency NOT 100% foolproof blueprints (there are always variations in Google).

In fact, quite different SEO strategies can achieve similar outcomes so this thread is not an invitation for SEO fundamentalists to fly into a rage about someone else's opinion here or these guidelines - though mature debate is always welcome.

Also, the following recommendations are based on observations with my own site portfolio, those in my mastermind group and the thoughts of those that I respect in SEO.

What DOESN'T work anymore (or is much riskier, reverses past SEO best practice)

OFFPAGE

- Insufficient Anchor Text variation: mix it up as much as possible, even 20% maximum for target keywords, plenty of ‘click here’s, raw URL link, ‘this website’ type links – this is one of the biggest changes (read http://trafficplanet.com/topic/2798-anchor-text-suggestions-for-those-still-scratching-their-heads/)

- Lack of backlink type diversity (e.g. ALN/BMR only), forum profile backlinks; xRumer runs (unless at Tier 2/3), blog comments on pages with hundreds of spam comments

- Lack of relevant content on the page where the backlink exists (contradicts past practice)

- Paid PR links do still work BUT don't use them as a sole linkbuilding strategy (of course)

ONPAGE

- Deliberate on-page optimization: Titles, H1 tags, image Alt Text, WP Category, WP tags - should look as naturally written as possible)

- Keyword Density – basically your site shouldn’t look SEOd (opposite of best practice from past)

- lack of onpage engagement elements (more on that below)

- EMDs: hello Google red flag!

What does work in this new era?

- Observing the above ‘don’t’ principles

- Crucially, Google may be replacing the Anchor Text relevancy signal with page/site backlink topic – that’s big!

- Using Aged domains with PR as a repurposed site base still works great (I can still normally get Page 1 rankings within a week with these)

- Adding high PR page backlinks to that aged domain (must have PR) – on relevant topic

- Building many different element types on the page e.g. video, images, social media buttons, moderated comments, odiogo audio reader, (relevant) calculator/s, PDF downloads etc - try to increase visitor engagement

- Highly diverse backlink profile: wikis, Web 2.0, forum posts (not profiles!), satellite/pumper network/s, press release campaigns, pages where some relevant text surrounds backlink (NOT multiple topics on backlink pages)

- Buying domains that are already/still ranking on Domain Espionage

- Spun content is OK IF carefully done manually (for backlinks targets, not Money Sites obviously)

- Healthy mix of nofollow and dofollow links (recommended not thoroughly tested)

RECOVERY?

In terms of recovery from a nasty Penguin-shaped slap, pay close attention to upgrading your onpage elements as per the above recommendations, build some high quality new links (e.g. high PR page backlinks on pages with relevant content) with HIGHLY varied Anchors (no Money keywords at all).

Doppped Domains Are Effective or Not?

So after all this Penguin/Panda mess I decided to build a new money site on an aged high PR domain (in the past I always built my new sites on new domains). The domain is PR3 and is 8 years old, never been dropped. All of the backlinks going to it are pretty high quality, it's not just some junk PR3 domain.

I turned it into a review site for some products and for about the first week, all of the reviews started ranking fairly well without any links being built to them. The only links I built to the site were to the homepage and they were just some high PR blog comments. It was only about 20 high PR blog comments too, it's not like I spammed 10,000 to the site.

So since the review posts were ranking well, I started adding my affiliate links to the site. Within about 1-2 days of adding them, I lost rankings for ALL of my keywords that I was previously ranking for. I did nothing else aside from adding the affiliate links - no linkbuilding done at all yet so it can't be a link penalty. And when I say lost rankings I don't mean they dropped a couple pages - I mean they aren't anywhere to be found in Google. Everything is still fully indexed though.

I know one of the first thoughts is going to be that since I didn't yet build links to the posts, maybe they aren't ranking for that reason. But the keywords aren't all that competitive and even with 0 links pointing to the posts, they should at least be in the top 10 pages, especially since the domain is already aged with a decent PR.

Do you guys think it was the affiliate links that caused the ranking loss? I can't really think of anything else it could be. For now I removed all the links and am just seeing if it will come back...not sure what else to do.

Oh yeah and it's been about a week now so I don't think it's just a dance anymore.

From my experience the keys to ranking in bing.com are near Emd domains and home page backlinks

Bing also seems not to penalize anyone so affiliate sites are definitely in play

I believe with 1000 or more hpbl and an emd or near emd domain you could rank for almost anything ...even tier one words like car insurance

So the idea is we pool together a few thousand valueless deindex domains to make a hbpl just to rank in bing.

Suggested idea is everyone hosts 100 sites each and posts content to them

Quality can be like hpbl networks of old

Post Panda/Penguin - particularly with regard to the importance of anchor text variation - what is the best way to rank long tail KW's?

In the past, it seemed the best way was to create inner pages for each individual KW , set meta tags and content accordingly then build links to those inner pages. Can this still be the case? Would it now be better to create anchor text links for these long tail's that point instead to the home page? That would of course mean creating a great many different anchor text links to the home page which is now supposed to be a positive after Post Panda/Penguin?

Hey Guys,

I wanted to brainstorm ideas and mash them all together to provide a list of various ways to attract new customers to use your SEO services on a local scale (not like the for sale page in traffic planet).

For me, it has been a cross over from my main business which is Computer IT Support. One thign has led to another and I have managed SEO campaigns for customers with huge success for local and state wide keywords.

I would like to hear peoples ways and methods of how they are looking to get new clients on board from around your local area and get your foot in the door.

One way I am about to test out this week is to choose 10 different industries, and search google for those specific search terms related to their industry. Contact the people on page 2 and 3 and advise them of their postition in google and to offer a free consultation/evaluation for them and also offer to come out and meet them in person.

Not sure it will work very well but its cheap and super easy to why not!

What are your thoughts?

Reuse High PR Domains

I have quite a few sites that have been hit, many of these have high PR and have great DA and PA scores..Should I link these to my new money sites? Anyharm done in linking from a penalized domain?

BTW, I tried to 301 an old money site to a new site and the penalty carried through. (Perhaps another way to do negative seo)

This seems to be a major issue for most people. Please note this tutorial was made on 4-10 and some of the examples may change in the future if the webmaster updates his or her website.

Most people know how to navigate through the Title and Meta tags, how to create properly optimized content and navigation that flows. What most people do not understand is proper indexation and duplication/similar/overlapping content.

What I say duplicate content I am referring to exact copies of the same page on the same website. You can also have offpage duplicate content caused by people stealing your content or you stealing theirs.

When I say similar content, I am referring to having two articles like "How to make money online" and "Making Money Online".

When I say overlapping content, I am referring to having partially duplicate content appear on the page. The best example is an except.

Now a certain amount if duplicate/similar/overlapping content appears to be tolerate. It because a problem when there is an abundance of them and this will make your site rank lower. Having several of these low quality pages will hurt you.

I randomly searched for the term make money online and found this EMD. I have no idea who owns this website, so they will serve as an example: http://makemoneyonline.biz/ They currently rank about #45.

Now this website is going to have a difficult time climbing on to page 1 in my opinion. Here are several reasons why.

If you visit Google.com and do site:makemoneyonline.biz you will start to notice a few problems.

1. This tag page is serving up overlapping content. This person has it in the form of an except, but many tag pages will display the full article.

Google Adsense messages will tell you to put 3 or more ads on the website because you're missing out on potential revenue. What they didn't tell you is too many ads seems to decrease your onpage SEO score. In general one ad above the fold is fine and then a second one is fine lower as long as you have 500-1000 words on the page.

So how can this problem be solved? In general, use your Wordpress SEO plugin and noindex, nofollow category/tag/author pages unless you really know what you are doing. I see this problem every day and people blame it on link building. What actually happens is since Panda 1.0 Google has been holding sites in cue. Then when they release an update they penalize all of these sites for onpage SEO. Another common thing I see is someone builds links and then they drop. This is because the Googlebot is coming back to the website and evaluating the website again and then notices all of the poblems.

But one thing to consider is I spread this out over 2 urls/keywords and I bought the smaller promo, meaning the bare minimum - so bang for the buck I see nothing working this well. (currently I am testing 4 different promos simultaneously using different urls and keywords).

Hello guys,

My homepage has been gone from SERPS (google) over 1,5 months. It was climbing nice on the google, I also hit the first page, but then suddenly is disappeared to spot 551 and it has been stayed there for 1,5 months. What is funny is that my subpages: about me, privacy policy etc OUTRANK the homepage.

What I have done to get my site back?

- More backlinks
- Added 7 new articles
- Changed the website structure
- Lessened keyword density
- Changed titles and snippets

... but nothing seems to bring back my site. I'm pretty depressed already..

I also sent reconsideration request to google, but they said that everything is OK and there is no manual penalty.

E: My very first affiliate site was doing the same thing. When it hit first page then it went to 500+ and stayed there for 1 month, but after 1 month it popped back to first place. So there is still some hope, but I really don't know what should I do in order to get my website back to top10.

Does This Conversions Nightmare Sound Familiar?

So one of my current affiliate marketing models goes like this:

1. Identify a juicy niche to attack.

2. Do the obligatory Keyword Research.

3. Build a shoddy-but-original one page WP site on an aged PR4 domain.

4. Throw some HPBL links at it until it ranks on page one and gets some traffic (100+ uniques a day, Statcounter installed for some intel).

5. Install a plugin that allows me to use iframes and put a vendor's whole site on my site (the domain doesn't change in the browser) and let my organic search traffic go 'straight' to the vendor's page.

These are 'churn and burn' type sites to assess conversions on vendor sites - Googlebot gets shown something different to human viewers. These sites don't last that long but long enough to get a picture of conversions.

6. So then I experiment with different vendors on Clickbank or other aff programs e.g. Plimus and watch the conversions from that Google Organic traffic that I am sending - as far as the cold traffic prospect is concerned - straight to the vendor's highly optimized, expensively copywritten, tested and tracked homepage (but to the human visitor, it looks like they are still on my site, if that makes sense).

In theory, all good so far and this technique MASSIVELY speeds up business intelligence on whether a particular product is worth promoting.

But, and it's a pretty substantial but, finding any sales pages that consistently convert cold search engine traffic is EXTREMELY difficult.

And I am talking about products with gravity over 300, 400 and 500 on CB here!

Interestingly, impressions stats from the iframe plugin and CB (and others) usually don't match up in terms of hops sent/impressions.

At best, some might get 1 sale in 1000 hops/impressions and I am sending a lot of traffic to these sites.

So my questions are:

[1] These products can't all be getting their sales from lists (some aren't suited to listbuilding anyway) - so where do they get their high-gravity converting traffic from if not from Google (media buying traffic would convert worse, wouldn't it?)?

[2] Have you had similar experiences of driving massive traffic and seeing very little/no return in terms of conversions?

[3] Am I missing a crucial piece of the puzzle here that you can see?

Google+ Manipulation: Negative Social Proof?

I was using addmefast.com on one of my sites to get some Google+'s for it - I let it run for 10 mins and I got about 20 +'s in that short time - obviously not very natural looking (I didn't realise just how fast addmefast.com can be). Anyway, sure enough Google reset my Google+ count a few hours later. Fair enough.

I'm just wondering if Google then see that site as being "dodgy" since it tried to manipulate the Google+ count, and if so, then maybe Google would choose to discount other signals of social proof (Facebook likes etc) as being "likely manipulated" too.

If this is true, it would then be easy to "black mark" a site with a quick burst of Google+'s from addmefast.com (20 or 30+s in a few minutes, cost 20c to 30c), then wait for Google to do it's reset, and voila, we have created a black stain (in regards to social proof) for that site.

Huh? Why Are You Telling Us More Than Just PR?
The reason is because PR does not tell the whole story, and is not as important as many people believe it is. Here is an illustration:

High Network Security:

Sites spread across 15 different hosting companies in diverse geographic locations. No more than 5 sites per IP. Although it's a pain in the butt to setup this many hosting accounts, it's much more secure and less of a footprint than using 1 or 2 SEO hosting companies which are frequently targeted by G.

What special precautions have you taken to avoid de-indexing?

The 3 key factors:
1) Unique Content. You may not know this, but if you take a 300 word article and spin it to 80% uniqueness, then post it on 40 sites, tons of the variations will be detected in copyscape. To avoid this, we post 100% unique 75-100 word posts manually written by a VA with excellent English skills. I pay more than most for VA's in order to obtain high quality English that you would be proud to show a client.

2) Varied OBL. Another easy method to detect blog networks is when all of the OBL are the same. We purposely offer a maximum of 40 posts on a 65+ site network to ensure that the links are randomly placed among the 65+ sites. 3) Regular Shared Hosting. SEO hosting has come under fire lately as it becomes apparent that G takes special interest in hosting companies that put themselves out there as "SEO Hosting." The solution is to blend in with normal sites and create a much smaller footprint. It's no longer a wise idea to risk having all of your sites on 1 or 2 hosts which are frequently used by other internet marketers for blog networks which may come under manual review by G employees. We've spread our sites out across 15+ hosting companies that host millions of other sites.

What else do you do to set yourself apart?

Our sites have themes installed which closely mirror the original purpose of the site, along with 1 sticky on-topic post at the top talking about whatever issue might have been discussed on it originally. For instance, if it's a site that used to be owned by a diving company, we talk about how much fun diving is and traveling to great dive sites, etc... and it has no link. I personally set up each site and write the first post myself to ensure that it fits with the overall theme of the site. The goal is to pass the "glance test" where someone might click one of the original links to the site and see that it's still the same stuff, and not a link farm. Of course, if they scroll down, the game is up, but a 2 second glance will hopefully avert their suspicion and thus retain a valuable link to the site.

Why am I explaining all of this?

My goal is to provide the kind of information I would want to know, as an experienced IM'r, that would make me comfortable entrusting the rankings of my money sites to someone I don't know. Imagine you have a site on cat food.

You put a ton of articles on it relating to cat food.

You dont use categories or any silo structure..

You just have many articles on cat food, some overlap:

Pixelgrinder and I conducted a little experiment on whether negative seo was possible in the current climate - we felt it was important to know whether it was possible for a site to be negatively affected completely by outside influences.  This experiment was not done with the knowledge or consent of TrafficPlanet.com owners/admin/moderators.

We carried out a massive scrapebox blast on two sites to ensure an accurate result.  The two sites we chose and the reasons we chose them are as follows:

Blasting to Dilute Penguinified Site's Anchors?

Hey guys

I had stopped hearing about Penguin.. until I came onto ahrefs.com and saw a link to this site.

I used to go to the old forum and I didn't relaize this is the new form of it...

So its nice to be back...

Anyway, I had many sites that ranked very well for YEARS and got hit bad by Penguin.  Its been a very rough time for me...

I hired a guy who I dont believe knows a lot about SEO (to help recover me) and I am ready to take matters into my own hands and do some work on my sites.

Until now I'v always outsoruced my SEO and I know for certain my inbound links are far too same-text'd matchy-matchy.

SO part of me wants to blast the site because I am now starting to think that G isn't quite as sophisticated as we think and that Penguin is simply about overoptimization of inbound anchors... and that the quality of these links doesn't matter as much as we may think.

So I am tempted to get a few thousand backlinks to my site that say click here, here, this site, etc. etc. etc..

My domain is close to an EMD so using the domain as the anchor I feel might trigger the filters further.

I realize my plan here has been talked about by many... but what are your thoughts on it ?  Some people have claimed to have success diluting, whiel others argue that G still has to do a Penguin update.

I've also heard its possible to blast a page that is 301'd to your main page. So if you ever build links and it hurts you, you can just ditch the page..

So my questions:

1.) Has penguin been refreshed? Will it be refreshed? Or is it an ongoing thing that people are truly overcoming already?
2.) Is there any risk building a bunch (a few thousand) of low quality links to penguin-punished sites that have a few thousand links?

What are your thoughts?

I wanted to add adsense account on one of my blogs that is related to technical information twice, but unfortunately, my application was rejected on both occasions.

The reason being- "Your website is a type of website that we do not currently
accept into our program. Such websites include, but are not limited to,

that use excessive keywords in the content or code of their pages."

Hi,

I have a small business client building an online shop as an addon to their offline store and ebay. The volume is not big, so I am not looking for something like Magento (nor does the client has the budget for it).

So far I’ve been looking at several providers, both self and cloud hosted.

As far as the cloud, the option seems off, since I’ve read some really terrible reviews on Volusion and BigCommerce customer support (including lies in advertising). As far as Shopify I heard it is way too simple.

From the Open source, there are very mixed reviews on every cart out there.

Prestashop - Some say Prestashop is good (not sure if those are real reviews), some say that you have to pay for almost every common option out there, and the out of the box software is very stripped down. Paying is not a problem, so if several thousand dollars have to be invested that is fine. Just want to make sure that the cart, as well as the add-ons actually work.
OS Commerce – too old and there are upgraded version of it.
ZEN Cart – currently doing the research, but it is an updated / customized version of OS Commerce
Magento - off the list. From what I understand it’s a very robust platform, but needs some very serious tweaking by coders for many $$$ hours. Also, this is more of an enterprise software, rather than a small shop cart.
OpenCart – did not look into details. Will post once I know more.
Freeway – also do not know the details.

Xcart seems to be 1 choice right now, however I have not seen any up to date templates for it anywhere. Everything on the market seems from way back 2001 style. Are there problems with designers or the cart is way out of date now? Also one of the problems shop owners report with it is inability to update the cart if its been customized (seems like a problem with every cart), so all the updates end up costing $$$ and time.

Was wondering if you can recommend some carts, from your own experience. It is very important you tried and actually worked with the carts, rather than read research / forums / blogs, as actual users know the real pitfalls of the software. If you used the software, and know the ups and downs, please post them.

Would appreciate your input, and I will be back with some info on more carts as I do more research.

I have a small product that I'd like to do some testing on ans wondered the best way to go about it...

It seems there are a couple of ways to split test for figuring out the best layout and design for product sales, either run with scenario A for a few weeks then switch to scenario B, or use a split testing script that randomly displays A or B to each visitor...? Are there other ways?

Has anyone any experience of using a script, or does Google have split testing service built in somewhere?

Need some advice from people who have had their sites hit hard from Panda 3.3 and Penguin.

I was ranking really well for some competitive keywords in a certain diet niche. I averaged around 600 uniques daily. My link profile was fairly diverse but I relied too much on BMR for rankings. When Panda 3.3 hit and de-indexed BMR, I lost 70% of my traffic, then Penguin came along and now I have lost 90% of my traffic, and have taken 50-100 hit in search results.

So my question to those who have multiple sites, who got hit hard with the updates, is it better to start over with a new domain/site, or keep pushing the site that was penalized, and hope the ranking go back up?

Getting independent of Google for traffic is the latest 'talk of the town' and when it comes to this approach there are many props and cons. I would like to get started with the discussion so that if we can build a thread with some genuine discussions, it could be of a great start.

Lets discuss the Props first.

If we build a system where we get traffic from other sources than google, we have a sustainable business model
No need to worry about any search engine algo changes, efforts can be utilized for building better products/services
We get a better laser targeted traffic which would be converting more easily
Our business never turns upside down in a single day.
Never get saturated because of the below mentioned cons

Cons

Not as easy as getting traffic from Google by doing some SEO (read it as linkbuilding)
Need more solid content, videos etc to promote our service/product.
Need more time
Need more investment

Now it comes to important point on how to do this (non depending Google for traffic).

There are many ways I could think of,

1. Create our own email list and do email marketing, email marketing converts well if we use it correctly. when it comes to creating email list there are many ways to do it.

  a. Create a free WSO / free product related to your niche , this is a very successful way to build the list.
  b. Distribute a useful ebook on your blog
  c. Create a good Video to generate leads
  d. USE PPC to build your list

2. Twitter marketing is not dead yet! hint hint.

3. Facebook advertisements / other PPC advts / Banner advertisements

4. Forum marketing is one of the very powerful method which is very much under utilized. I am writing this thread as part of this strategy

5. Create good Howto/tutorials based on your niche and publish it. You get a targeted traffic

6. Once you create a good article , try to think how you can convert it to different forms , say convert it into video, podcast, ebook, guest blog etc

7. Guest blogging and commenting on related niche (not spamming) is proved to be a good source of traffic over and over.

8. Interview a GURU from your niche , publish it on your blog, convert the same to different formats like videos, podcast, ebook

Hope I gave a good start , so keep coming with ideas and lets give it a try..

I've always beat my competition in super non-competative niches relying soley on on-page optimization i.e. title, H1-H3 tags with a healthy 3-4% keyword density. Overall, you're paying about $10.40 for:

1 Property built, themed, organized with pictures
2 well written, readable, professional articles
A huge # of wiki links
A ton of "sauce" contextual links
Forum profiles to all your tier 2 links to make sure the SEs take notice of them

How long would it take you to do all of the above? Writing the articles and making the property would probably take 45 minutes - an hour alone, not to mention having to **** around with XRumer project settings for the wikis and forum profiles. Let's say each of these would take 1 hr 15 mins to build from start to finish. I'm pretty sure that's worth $10.40 on, wouldn't you agree?

Andrey is a true professional and I really enjoy working with him every time. The reporting for this is extensive and looks just as professional as the properties themselves.

This is such a steal for $125. You're doing yourself a real disservice if you don't put this into your link profile.

Many of the high pr domains I've purchased have a lot of old pages with links pointing to them. I'm not going to try to recreate those pages, so what is the easiest way to 301 all of those pages? I know how to 301 specific pages but I'm hoping for a faster solution. I'm going to have a wordpress blog on the domain so I wasn't sure if a "catch all" type 301 would work.

Is there a way to just 301 404 pages or something?

I am currently bumping sales threads every morning so that every thread that needs it gets bumped to the top of the classified section at least twice a month.

If you have any questions I would rather you post them in this thread instead of sending me a PM. You will get a much fast response that way and I will not need to answer the same questions multiple times.

And, the Internet is like a huge, live science lab to start researching and experimenting on today - there are literally no gatekeepers, no qualifications or degrees required, nothing - just the discipline to research, experiment, learn and document. How brilliant is that?

Most failing IMers don't have - or never will have - the discipline to focus on developing specialised, valuable expertise/information and therefore will never succeed.
